Two infant deaths and multiple outbreaks: Beware of bacteria

  |   Nov 08, 2016  |  Wrongful Death

A pesky and persistent bacteria called, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, is commonly found in hospitals. This water born bacteria is known for causing serious infections, some resulting in death. The truth is, hospital-borne infections, such as this one, can be deadly, but they are also easily preventable if medical centers take proper precautions.

After two deaths and multiple out breaks of this deadly germ, a Maryland hospital has closed its neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) until the source of the bacteria has been found and eradicated. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that this germ kills about 400 people per year. They also stated that this bacterium is difficult to treat and to eliminate.

What causes Pseudomonas?

This bacterium likes wet or moist places. It can be formed in medical devices such as breathing tubes or ventilators, sponges, wound dressing, unwashed hands or unsterile medical equipment.

This infection is commonly found patients that have weak immune systems. This can include:

  • Cancer patients
  • New born and infants
  • Burn victims
  • Patients on ventilators or catheters
  • Patents after a surgery

These patients are at a higher risk because their immune system has a more difficult time fighting off the infection. Medical equipment that was not properly cleaned can result in a serious illness for patients.

Medical malpractice claim

To file a claim for medical malpractice you must be able to prove that there was negligence or that proper medical practices were not employed.

Hospitals are responsible for providing patients with a sterile and clean environment. If doctors make a mistake and do not take proper measures to sterilize medical equipment or the hospital environment, this can be considered negligence.

If a hospital or medical center knows that they have an outbreak of bacteria, personnel need to notify patients. This particular bacterium is difficult to eradicate and is easily spread. Anyone who is infected must also receive treatment right away. Failure to notify and treat patients can be considered a negligent act.

No one should have to suffer from inadequate medical care. If you or a loved one was given improper medical treatment or not properly treated, you should speak with an attorney. A lawyer who has experience working on medical malpractice cases can help you receive compensation for your losses and distress. These situations are difficult, which is why you should let a trusted and experienced lawyer help relieve some of your pain and stress.
