Avet Pharmaceuticals Inc. recently voluntarily recalled several lots of its 250 mg and 500 mg bottles, each containing 100 pills, due to low dissolution results. For this reason, a patient may not receive the full measure of the drug needed. Treating an infection in a person with a compromised immune system with a medication that is not full strength could make his or her situation worse and could even lead to death.
Tetracycline is often prescribed for skin and soft tissues infections, upper and lower respiratory infections, among other maladies. A person suffering from a respiratory infection such as pneumonia who takes a medication without the full measure of antibiotic would likely see a prolonged illness, and the condition could possibly get worse very quickly. Medical facilities and pharmacies are urged to stop dispensing the affected medication immediately.
Patients here in Ohio could still be taking this medication without knowing that their health is compromised. Even when the Food and Drug Administration does what it can to get information about recalls out to the people who need to know, it may not be fast enough to stop someone from suffering harm. Under these circumstances, it may be possible to hold manufacturers, distributors and others liable for any damages sustained.
