There is a lot of charm to living or working in an older building. Decades worth of history can turn what might seem like just another building in Ohio into something all its own. But while they might have a certain appeal, there is a real danger to spending time in them. Asbestos is frequently found in older buildings, and this toxic substance can be released into the air as buildings age and materials begin to break down.
Asbestos is a durable substance that was once favored in construction. It was often used in all sorts of building materials, including roofing felt, vinyl floor tiles, pipeline wrapping and more. Asbestos is generally fused right into these products, making it hard to recognize.
The danger is not necessarily in asbestos that is still safely infused in products. Instead, it is the asbestos fibers released into the air from either decaying products or construction work that are the problem. Once inhaled, the fibers are deposited in the lungs and start to cause life threatening harm. Scarring of the lungs called asbestosis and the fatal cancer mesothelioma are just two examples of how asbestos can permanently alter the course of someone’s future.
These diseases usually develop after regular exposure to asbestos. Construction workers or Ohio employees who work in old buildings are especially at risk for exposure, although many may be unaware that they are put in harm’s way every time they clock in. As such, holding employers or other negligent parties responsible for asbestos exposure can be beneficial in two ways. Mesothelioma and asbestosis victims might be able to secure compensation for their damages while also alerting others about dangerous situations.
