3 fire risks in hotels

  |   Jul 09, 2024  |  Wrongful Death

When you have checked into a hotel for a relaxing stay, the last thing you expect is to hear the fire alarm. However, the reality is that there are thousands of hotel fires every year in the U.S., resulting in serious injuries and even fatalities.

What are some of the biggest fire risks in hotels?

1. The kitchen

Most hotels have kitchens. These serve food to paying guests, often around the clock. Kitchen equipment operates at high temperatures, meaning that a fire risk is always present. Generally, the risk of fires is less when the kitchen is fully staffed. However, when the chefs and staff go home, the risk becomes greater. It only takes one piece of cooking equipment to be left on to spark a fire that can spread throughout the hotel.

2. Smoking

Smoking is generally permitted in around 20% of rooms in most Ohio hotels. It is no secret that smoking is one of the biggest causes of house fires in the U.S., and the same applies to hotels. If a person falls asleep while a cigarette is still lit, a fire can quickly spread throughout the room and the rest of the hotel.

3. Electrical equipment

Hotels like to be equipped with mod cons. Most of these are powered by electricity. Unfortunately, electric equipment is prone to heating up and picking up faults. It only takes one piece of faulty electrical equipment to start a fire that soon gets out of control.

If you have been injured or lost a loved one in a hotel fire, you may be able to hold the owners to account. Seek legal guidance to find out more about personal injury law in Ohio.
