Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer primarily associated with one toxic substance. Many of the people here in Ohio and elsewhere who were exposed to asbestos through their employment or in some other way may always have a fear of receiving a diagnosis of this cancer at some point. However, other medical conditions can result from asbestos exposure.
Another condition called asbestosis could also affect those exposed to this particular toxic substance. Ohio residents who have a history of asbestos exposure and begin experiencing shortness of breath may want to see a doctor as quickly as possible. It would be a good idea to alert the doctor to the possibility of asbestosis.
A visit to a pulmonologist, a lung doctor, would be the next step. A detailed examination could help determine whether the individual’s condition would warrant a diagnosis of asbestosis. One of the most important aspects of making such a diagnosis is the patient’s exposure to asbestos in the past. Other symptoms that indicate this condition include a persistent dry cough, tightness or pain in the chest, and a crackling, dry sound when breathing in. Another symptom that may seem odd includes the fingertips and toes becoming wider and rounder than normal.
Suffering from any asbestos-related illness is more than likely a frightening prospect. Asbestosis may not be considered as “bad” as mesothelioma, but it can still substantially affect a person’s life, and not just due to the need for medical care. An individual could become unable to work and sustain other damages as well. Determining whether it would be possible to pursue benefits and/or restitution may be a worthwhile endeavor.
