Is talc in cosmetics dangerous?

  |   Aug 09, 2022  |  Talcum Powder

Many people in Ohio and across the country have used cosmetics with talc as an ingredient over the years. Sadly, the substance has been linked to cancer due to certain elements.

What is talc?

Talc is a mineral that is made up of hydrogen, magnesium, oxygen and silicon. It has most commonly been associated with baby powder or talcum powder but is also used in other types of cosmetics. The ingredient is known for absorbing moisture, keeping the skin dry and preventing rashes. It is also used to make cosmetics more opaque and flawless.

Talc is found not only in powder cosmetic products; it’s also a common additive found in eyeliner, mascara, eyebrow pencils, lipsticks, moisturizing cream, lotions and concealer. The amount of talc found in cosmetics depends on the particular product and even the brand.

Does talc cause cancer?

In spite of some positive uses for talc, it has also been known to contain asbestos, which can cause certain types of cancer. Studies dating back to the 1960s made note of the possible link between talc and ovarian cancer in women due to the use of talcum powder. While there was no definitive relationship determined, the Food and Drug Administration has continued to investigate talc with asbestos as an ingredient.

While investigations are ongoing into talc and its link with asbestos, cosmetics with talc can cause problems if they are inhaled. These products should always be kept out of the reach of children as they can cause serious respiratory problems, eye irritation and even nausea, vomiting and diarrhea if ingested.

Cosmetics that contain talc should also not be applied to the skin when there is an open wound. Doing so can cause inflammation.
