Company finds toxic materials in its CBD oil

  |   May 23, 2020  |  Products Liability

The popularity of CBD oils has increased dramatically in recent years across the country and here in Ohio. It claims numerous health benefits — as long as it is not contaminated with toxic materials. For instance, Summitt Labs recently issued a recall of one of its brands of CBD oil due to dangerous levels of lead.

Summitt Labs issued the recall for its KORE ORGANIC Watermelon CBD Oil Tincture, 30 ml bottle, 15mg 450x, which is sold to consumers. Testing for lead by the company’s home state’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services indicated levels much higher than allowed by law. However, the company’s testing indicated the levels were within legal parameters.

In an abundance of caution, Summitt Labs chose to err on the side of caution and pull the affected product from the market even though test results between it and the state of Florida differ. Anyone who has consumed the product and is exhibiting symptoms of lead poisoning, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, muscle weakness and pain, should consult a physician. Other symptoms could arise as well that indicate a medical issue. So far, the company has not received any complaints regarding lead poisoning. Even though the Food and Drug Administration does not regulate CBD oil, it will take any reports regarding adverse effects associated with this recall.

Further testing may need to be done in order to determine whether the toxic materials are actually present in the recalled product. Hopefully, that process can be completed before anyone develops any adverse health issues through its use. If not, the affected individuals here in Ohio and elsewhere may find it necessary to make the connection between the recalled product and the illness, which is often the first step in recovery and the pursuit of restitution for the harm caused by it.
