A multicar pileup that happened on U.S. 50 in Clermont County on Jan. 24 most likely resulted from inclement weather leading to hazardous road conditions according to police. The series of car accidents shut the highway down for hours and resulted in two motorists losing their lives.
After an initial assessment of the scene, police believe that the series of events began when a semi truck driven by a 60-year-old man lost its attached trailer while traveling east on U.S. 50. The detached trailer veered into the westbound lanes where it was struck by a Chevrolet truck driven by a 43-year-old male motorist. The force of the impact caused the Chevy truck to hit the westbound guardrail and ricochet into the oncoming eastbound traffic, where it hit an oncoming Ford truck before leaving the roadway and landing in a ditch. The driver of the Chevy truck died at the accident scene.
The 39-year-old male driver of a Dodge Ram truck that was traveling westbound was also killed when his vehicle struck the detached trailer and another oncoming vehicle collided with his truck. A female motorist received treatment for her injuries at Bethesda North Hospital. The semi driver and the motorist in the Ford truck did not suffer any injuries. The Ohio State Highway Patrol is conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
