According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, 330 accidents have been investigated by the agency so far this year. In comparing these figures to those for the same time-frame in 2013, the number of car accidents has increased. For Licking County alone, a recent head-on collision was the fourth fatal accident this year.
This most recent accident occurred in St. Albans Township and resulted in the death of a 61-year-old woman. The crash occurred after the driver of an SUV started to go off the side of the road, then overcorrected and veered into oncoming traffic. After impact, the victim’s vehicle went off the road and rolled several times before coming to a stop in a ditch. The victim was ejected from her car, and she died at the scene of the crash.
The driver of the SUV, a 19-year-old female, was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries. It is unknown if any charges have been filed against her. Police have not released any information regarding the circumstances leading up to the crash.
Understandably, head-on car accidents can have life-altering consequences for many people. In this instance, a family has lost a loved one in a tragic and unexpected way, which is often emotionally difficult and financially draining as well. If negligence is found to be a contributing factor in the cause of the crash, the victim’s family may opt to pursue a wrongful death claim on behalf of their loved one. If liability established against the individual deemed responsible, an Ohio civil court could award the victim’s family members a monetary judgement to help recoup the financial losses sustained as a result of the tragedy.
