Cars with anti-lock brakes stop better on ice if the driver presses and holds the brake, while drivers without anti-lock brakes should gently pump the brake pedal until the car stops.

The general rule is for the driver to release the accelerator and steer gently in the direction he or she wants the car to go. The driver may have to adjust from one direction to the other until the car straightens out. He or she should be careful not to panic and overcompensate by turning the wheel too hard or suddenly.
