Multiple vehicle accidents can easily lead to fatalities

  |   Aug 01, 2018  |  Car Accidents

Interstates and highways here in Ohio and elsewhere are designed to keep traffic moving. Unfortunately, there are many times when the traffic slows or actually comes to a complete stop, especially in construction zones. One driver’s mistake in these areas could lead to multiple vehicle accidents, which could easily lead to fatalities.

Troopers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol recently responded to a crash that took place in a construction area on Interstate 75. Traffic had slowed due to the ongoing roadwork, but a commercial vehicle failed to respond in time to the change in the traffic’s speed. That vehicle set off a chain reaction that ultimately involved six vehicles.

The mixture of commercial and passenger vehicles led to three of the vehicles bursting into flames in the median. Emergency medical personnel transported one person to a nearby hospital for injuries not believed to be life-threatening. Another woman said to have occupied one of the passenger vehicles succumbed to fatal injuries suffered in the accident. Reportedly, no one else suffered any injuries. The prevailing theory is that the driver who began the chain-reaction crash was distracted or otherwise not paying attention.

Assigning negligence in chain-reaction vehicle accidents can present a challenge. It may not be quite as simple as the operator of the rear vehicle being declared the at fault driver, even if that happens to be the case. In order to better understand the legal options available, it may be beneficial to discuss the matter with an attorney who routinely represents injured individuals, or the families of those who are killed in car crashes.
