Postal workers here in Ohio and elsewhere who deliver mail spend a significant amount of their workdays in their vehicles. This increases their risk of being involved in automobile accidents. Many have suffered serious or deadly injuries over the years due to other drivers’ mistakes.
Recently, a postal worker here in Ohio suffered fatal injuries in a crash on Route 94. The 59-year-old was headed north at around 4 p.m. on a Wednesday afternoon. At the same time, a Dodge Caravan was closing in on him from behind. For some reason, the minivan failed to stop and slammed into the back of the postal worker’s vehicle. It then flipped over and ended up coming to a stop off the roadway.
By the time emergency responders got to the man, it was too late. He died at the scene. The 31-year-old driver of the other vehicle only suffered minor injuries. Police do not suspect alcohol or drugs as factors in the crash, which remains under investigation. It is possible that she could face criminal charges depending on what investigators find.
In the meantime, the family of the Ohio postal worker may receive benefits from the state’s workers’ compensation system. Since the death of their loved one involved another driver, they may seek restitution from the driver in a third-party claim. Successfully proving negligence in such a claim could result in an award of damages seen in other deadly automobile accidents in which one party was performing his or her job duties at the time of death.
