Once someone has been exposed to asbestos, they forever have an increased risk of developing mesothelioma. It’s simply – and very unfortunately – more likely that that person is going to develop cancer at some point in their life because they have been exposed to asbestos fibers.
At least, that’s how the narrative has traditionally played out. However, there’s a new drug that is being studied that could significantly change health outcomes for asbestos victims. The hope is that it can be given to those who have already been exposed to asbestos, and that it could either prevent or delay the development of mesothelioma. This means it could be used to treat the most high-risk individuals, an option that was available previously.
How does the new drug it work?
The new drug is known as SC144. It has been given to mice, where it delayed the formation of tumors and blocked inflammation pathways. It also made it possible for the mice to survive longer, along with anti-inflammatory medications. Doctors say that they’re very excited about this and they think it’s quite promising. But they are still in the early stages, so it will be interesting to see what happens when they begin doing human trials – if it is safe to do so.
Delaying development may be enough
Mesothelioma usually develops years or even decades after a person has been exposed to asbestos. There are many people who were exposed through employment in their 30s and 40s, for example, but who didn’t develop mesothelioma until they were in their 70s or 80s.
If this drug could delay the development of cancer, those exposed to asbestos may never get cancer in their lifetime. The new drug doesn’t have to entirely stop mesothelioma from forming. It just has to make it take long enough that it wouldn’t develop during a person’s normal lifespan. If it can do that, it’s as good as preventing the cancer entirely. Someone’s quality of life – and the length of their life – would not be altered.

Unfortunately, this drug is still in the very early stages of testing, so it isn’t being used yet. Additionally, it may unfortunately be too late for many people who have been exposed to asbestos and already have mesothelioma.
