2 reasons mesothelioma is usually fatal

  |   Nov 13, 2023  |  Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is an aggressive type of cancer. It has a relatively high fatality rate. This is not to say that there are no treatment options, but simply that this is a very dangerous disease and a diagnosis needs to be taken quite seriously. Prompt medical treatment may be necessary.

But why is it that mesothelioma, which is often caused by asbestos exposure, is so dangerous? Below are two reasons why the mortality rate is so high.

It can spread quickly

One of the issues with mesothelioma is that it can spread throughout the body. This is known as metastasizing. When cancer begins to spread, it can lead to additional complications and health risks. This also makes it much more difficult to treat. Mesothelioma often begins in the abdomen or the tissue surrounding the lungs, so it can spread through the chest cavity and into other areas where surgical treatment options may be nearly impossible.

Most patients are older

Another reason why the rate is so high, though, is just that many people who have mesothelioma are already in their 60s or 70s. This disease is caused by exposure to asbestos, but it often doesn’t develop into mesothelioma for decades. A person may have been exposed while they were working in their 20s and 30s, for example, but may not actually be diagnosed with cancer until they’re in their 70s. Since the general group of individuals who have this disease tends to be older, mortality rates are naturally going to be higher.

Family members need to be aware of the challenges that mesothelioma can create and the treatment options they have. They also need to know about their options to seek compensation when this treatment is expensive.
