On Oct. 1, three vehicles were involved in a crash in Sylvania Township at around 1 p.m., according to authorities. The accident reportedly occurred on West Central Avenue near the Herr Road intersection, and it led to the fatal personal injury of one motorist.
According to the Ohio Highway Patrol, the accident occurred when a 58-year-old man who was temporarily stopped in the eastbound side of West Central Avenue was rear-ended by another driver, a 19-year-old man from Ottawa Lake. The man who was hit was waiting to make a turn north onto Herr Road, and the collision forced his vehicle onto the other side of the street.
After being pushed across the center of the road, the Berkey motorist’s vehicle was hit by an oncoming commercial truck. This flung his vehicle onto the north side of the road, where it flipped over before coming to a rest on the side of the road. According to OHP reports, the accident was being investigated later that day, and Herr Road remained shut down in both directions for at least three hours while the debris was cleared. The other two drivers were not harmed in the incident, but the Berkey man later perished at Flower Hospital.
