Further investigation is often needed in car accidents

  |   Nov 06, 2019  |  Car Accidents

The first priority for first responders at a crash site is to ensure the safety of those involved and to assess their medical status. Thereafter, an investigation begins in order to determine the factors that led to a particular wreck. In many car accidents, further investigation is needed before authorities issue the final report.

On a recent Sunday morning just after 7 a.m., emergency medical personnel and troopers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to a two-vehicle accident. It took some time to free all four occupants of the two vehicles because two were trapped in the wreckage when the vehicles finally came to rest. The condition of those two individuals required first responders to transport them via helicopter to the hospital.

The two other people involved in this crash were transported via ambulance to hospitals in the area. By the time the scene was cleared, police still needed to conduct more investigation to determine what happened and to identify the driver suspected of causing the crash. From there, authorities will decide whether the circumstances warrant filing any criminal charges.

In addition, the victims of the crash may use this information as a starting point to gather evidence in personal injury claims aimed at pursuing restitution for the associated damages sustained. As is the case in other car accidents, it will be necessary to provide appropriate evidence of negligence or recklessness to the court. If that endeavor is successful, an Ohio court may enter a monetary judgment that could lead to much needed funds to cover medical and other financial losses.
