Where Idaho Asbestos Exposure Happened, From the Silver Valley to Pocatello?

Idaho’s mining and industrial history created real asbestos exposure, not a hypothetical one. 

In the Silver Valley of Shoshone County, the Bunker Hill Company ran one of the largest lead and silver smelters in the world at Kellogg from 1917 to 1981. Asbestos insulated the smelter’s boilers, piping, and furnace equipment for that entire span.

Underground miners at the Sunshine, Galena, and Lucky Friday mines worked around asbestos in ventilation systems, pipe covering, and brake linings on mining equipment.

Idaho National Laboratory near Idaho Falls used asbestos insulation on reactor piping and equipment well into the 1980s, and workers who serviced that equipment often did not learn about the exposure until decades later.
