Where Wyoming Workers Were Exposed to Asbestos?

Wyoming’s economy has long run on oil, mining, and power plants, and decades of that work have left the state with one of the highest mesothelioma rates in the country.

• Casper Mountain’s old asbestos mines, once the largest in Wyoming, and the Amoco Standard Oil Refinery in Casper
• The Sinclair and Frontier oil refineries, both built before the 1970s using asbestos insulation throughout their equipment
• Vermiculite processing plants that handled contaminated ore shipped from the W.R. Grace mine in Libby, Montana
• Soda ash and chemical plants around Green River, including the former Stauffer Chemical facility

Wyoming’s Asbestos Claim Deadlines, Explained Plainly

Wyoming gives you four years from the date you are diagnosed with mesothelioma, asbestosis, or another asbestos related disease to file a personal injury claim, under Wyo. Stat. Section 1-3-105(a)(iv)(C). The clock usually starts when you’re diagnosed, or as soon as you reasonably should have connected your illness to asbestos, since most people were exposed decades before symptoms ever appeared.

If a family member died from an asbestos related disease, Wyoming gives survivors two years from the date of death to file a wrongful death claim, under Wyo. Stat. Section 1-38-102(d). That deadline runs whether or not a personal injury claim was already filed before the death occurred.
